The midfielder spent last season on loan at Chelsea, but will he be back for another season?

Whilst all the talk of late has surrounded the next Chelsea manager, another big question still has to be answered.

Will Mateo Kovacic be signed on a permanent basis?

The Croatia international spent last season on loan at the west London outfit from Real Madrid and split opinions amongst supporters due to his consistent performances.

He did impress in the Europa League final win over Arsenal and his future could very well be decided by the man who replaces Maurizio Sarri in the Blues dugout.

With each passing hour it’s looking increasingly likely that Frank Lampard will make an emotional return to Stamford Bridge and his first task could be to decide the future of Kovacic.

Here’s what we know about the midfielder’s future so far.

Chelsea transfer ban

As many are aware, Chelsea’s two-window transfer ban was upheld by FIFA last month and they’ve since appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

If this isn’t overturned in the coming weeks, the west London outfit won’t be allowed to register any new players until the summer of 2020.

But what does this transfer ban mean for Kovacic?

Well, the Blues can make the move to extend his loan deal by a further season, as he was registered last season and they could also sign him for a €50million fee.

Real Madrid stance

Los Blancos have already made some big statements in the transfer market already.

The five new arrivals at the Santiago Bernabeu include Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic from Eintracht Frankfurt, Eder Militao from Porto, Rodrygo from Santos and Ferland Mendy from Lyon.

That has cost the Spanish giants upwards of £350million – figures that would seemingly be under the microscope of Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules – and remain interested in a deal for Manchester United’s Paul Pogba.

As a result, Madrid will need to sell some of their prized assets and Kovavic could be one of them.

According to Goal, Madrid want an answer from Chelsea in regards to their intentions for Kovacic before July 1. we

What Sarri has said

If Sarri stayed on as Chelsea head coach, there’s every chance he would have pushed for Kovacic to be signed permanently.

“No, I want to try with Kovacic,” Sarri said during the campaign. “He is only on loan, of course, but I’d like very much that Kovacic will stay with us.

“You know very well that, in that position, we have some problems because we have only Jorginho.

“In my opinion, Kovacic could become a very good central midfielder. Of course, he is not a defensive midfielder (at the moment) but, as you know, in that position I prefer a very technical player.

“In the last match, Jorginho touched 161 balls. So, for us, it’s very important for us to have big quality in that position. Big quality not for the last pass, but big quality in terms of moving the ball.”

But with Sarri taking up a position at Juventus, could it be that Sarri is reunited with the midfielder in Turin?
